The Brave Artist Community

You make things. You don’t have to do it alone.

Making things can be lonely and difficult – but it doesn’t have to be. The Brave Artist Community is filled with empathetic, supportive, thoughtful creatives who have realized that creating is better when there are other people who get it in your corner.

Creating is better together.

The Brave Artist Community is an online community where creatives of all disciplines can find accountability, support, and a brave space to share their creative journey and develop a creative practice. We welcome creatives of all disciplines – writers, visual artists, chefs, musicians, podcasters, dancers, etc.

And if you’re looking to create something like a knitting practice, or a new way of being, you’re just as welcome as the painters and quilters.

Membership to our community is a commitment

This isn’t about quick knowledge or skill acquisition. It’s not a course. It’s about building habits, relationships, and new ways of thinking to support you in living a more creative life.

Run on Discord with live Zoom meetings with membership powered by Patreon, the Brave Artist Community is a home to creatives from around the globe.

As we run our memberships through Patreon, we encourage you to join on the free tier to get our newsletters, or to hop into a free 7-day trial of our Scout or Adventurer memberships to get a feel for our community and Discord.

How the community works

We’ve got a few different spaces carved out depending on what/how you are most looking for support:

If you’re looking for accountability, we’ve got a bot that will help you track working on your creative progress every day, and will give you a shout-out when you hit a weeklong streak. We’ve also got live co-working sessions – one facilitated by us on Zoom, and also the option to set up your own in Discord voice.

If you’re looking to reflect on your practice, we’ve got weekly prompts to consider and a channel all about giving and getting feedback.

If you’re looking for support we’ve got community-sourced resources and a practice of celebrating our weekly wins. If you’d like to go deeper, we’ve got a weekly Zoom call to give each other virtual high fives, a monthly call to dive into a specific topic of creativity, and for Trailblazers, we have a monthly group coaching call.

Whether we’re typing, streaming our work, or meeting in a Zoom room, our priority is about fostering creativity through the creation of a brave space. To that end, these are the community practices that all members, including us, strive to uphold.

Our Community Practices

We are works-in-progress

Brave Artists know that a creative practice is just that – a practice. We acknowledge imperfection and life getting in the way and understand it’s a feature of a creative life, not a bug.

We celebrate support

Brave Artists try things and make things – which naturally includes missteps and setbacks. We support each other because we know how hard making is.

Brave Artists practice asking for the type of feedback they need (which is sometimes simply support) and also generously share feedback in return.

We focus on the journey

Brave Artists know that the journey is long, and we celebrate forward motion in our creative practice above all other outcomes, drip by drip, 10 minutes a day.

We re-frame challenges

Brave Artists practice turning fear into compasses, setbacks into opportunities, and failures into life lessons. We do this for ourselves, and most importantly, for others.

We practice bravery

Brave Artists lean into experimentation, sharing our work, and infinite game thinking. We show up in the arena and create despite fear.

We choose the game to play

Brave Artists understand the different systems we live in and choose which games to play, and by what rules.

We overcome limitations together

Brave Artists know that they are great at some things, and not great at others. We ask for help where we need it and offer help where we can.

We know we belong

Brave Artists know that they inherently belong without having to change to fit in to others’ expectations.

If you’re someone who wants to be foster a creative practice, get the support you need when creating gets tough, and wants to retrain how you think about yourself and your art, then we’d love for you to join us on this journey.

We’ve got four different subscription types on our Patreon. Our free option gets you our newsletter and archives, Scout gets you access to the Discord, Adventurer will invite you to our live calls, and Trailblazers gain access to the group coaching.

Frequently Answered Questions

I still donโ€™t get it – what exactly is this?

The Brave Artist Community is an online community for people who want to live their most creative lives possible. Itโ€™s run on a platform called Discord, and live virtual events occur on Zoom.

The Brave Artist Community at its most basic nature is an place to chat and share work structured by empathy and support. In reality itโ€™s a living, breathing community of creative individuals who are all there to do the work – whether that means drawing daily or finishing a manuscript or designing their dream life in another country – alongside each other.ย

For our Adventurers and Trailblazers, there are also plenty of opportunities to interact in real-time on Zoom. We host co-working sessions, weekly in-progress celebrations, and have monthly group coaching sessions, among other special events.

Iโ€™m not sure Iโ€™m an artistโ€ฆ

If youโ€™ve read this far, Iโ€™d bet you are.

We define the term โ€œartistโ€ the way that the dictionary does: a person who creates art using conscious skill and creative imagination.

If you are using skill and imagination to create something, youโ€™re an artist in our eyes. Maybe you create with food and recipes. Maybe itโ€™s chewed up bubble gum sculptures you keep in a drawer in your cubicle. Maybe it’s doing a post-it sketch a day. Maybe itโ€™s starting a business.

If you can imagine something new – a thing, a way of being, an idea – and you want to creatively bring that out into reality, you are an artist and we think youโ€™ll fit in just fine.

How does it work? Is this a class?

This is NOT a class, although we do have weekly prompts to help you reflect on your journey as an artist.

This is a living, breathing community of creative individuals – meaning this only works if you put in the work to join the community. There are no minimum time requirements, but we find that the people who get the most out of the experience dedicate at least 10 minutes a day to moving their work forward, and 10 minutes a day on the platform.

What does โ€œ10 minutes a dayโ€ look like?

Regarding your own practice, itโ€™s up to you. Some people spend that time writing, others doing research, others might be coding, or painting, or practicing ear training, or sketching, or anything else that moves your creative life forward.

Regarding time spent in the community, it might be responding to other peopleโ€™s comments on your posts, it could be writing a reflection on your work for the day. Maybe itโ€™s joining a co-working session or reading someone elseโ€™ posts.

What should I expect to get out of this?

It really depends on what you put into it. Itโ€™s just like real life in that the more time you spend supporting others and starting conversations, the more likely youโ€™ll find the support you need and have people eager to converse with you.

We also have a space to share your work-in-progress. If you choose to participate, this is the time to ask for feedback (we have more information on how best to ask for, give, and get useful feedback), get the support you need, and practice talking about your work.ย

As our past members have said, the primary benefit is having other like-spirited people who support your journey and celebrate all the many steps along your creative journey. Theyโ€™ll cheer for you when you ship a product out into the world, but more importantly theyโ€™ll be there to pick you up when the going gets hard.

Will there be other people in my discipline/medium?

Youโ€™re likely not to find a subject matter expert who can give you a perfect critique of your work (although you might.) However, you are likely to find friends who can cheer you along the way, offer new perspectives, and talk you down from the cliff of giving up.

When are the live calls?

All the live calls on Zoom are optional. We will have occasional special events, but already scheduled are our weekly calls, and our monthly group coaching huddles.

Weekly Co-Working calls are Tuesdays at 4pm PT.

Weekly High Five Friday calls are Fridays at 10am PT.

The Monthly Creativity Huddles are at 10am on the first Thursday of the Month. Monthly group coaching calls will (usually) be at 10am on the third Thursdays.

These times are subject to change per the needs of the community, and more options can always be added as we grow.

Do you offer trial memberships? Why six months?

We do offer 7-day trial memberships for our Scout and Adventurer support levels.

Due to our intention of creating a brave space at our live group coaching, we hope that you make sure that the space has the right vibe for you before committing to the Trailblazer level and we do not offer trials at this level.

That said, we do believe the fastest way to your goals – whether thatโ€™s a finished project like a portfolio or a novel or an album release or whether itโ€™s maintaining a daily writing or singing practice – is small, consistent steps. This steady, incremental progress is what we focus on supporting through weekly celebrations, checkbox accountability, and our weekly progress updates, and the longer you go leveraging these tools, the more likely it is to stick permanently.

Why isnโ€™t this free?

Providing the structure for spaces of belonging takes time and energy and resources. Just as we believe everyone, especially creatives who are largely undercompensated, should be compensated fairly for their time, so too should our work.

We also know what itโ€™s like to live in a capitalist system and be shut out from opportunities due to lack of funds. Thatโ€™s why we offer scholarships in order to make it financially viable for as many artists as possible.

What if Iโ€™m looking to start a business?

Starting a business is an incredibly creative process, and we welcome people looking for support in creating a new venture. That said, there is a line between talking about your business and directly soliciting clients.

Directly messaging other members with sales info (unless requested by the other member) is strictly forbidden and is grounds for removal from the community. Posting links in specific areas designed for self-promotion is fine.

We hope you join us.

If you’re looking for the support that only other creators can provide, we welcome you to join us. No matter if you’re looking to start, a seasoned pro, or anywhere in-between – as long as you are willing to try on the posture of a Brave Artist, we want you in here.

The world is waiting for your art. Be brave and join us.

โ€œBeing part of this community has shown me that I donโ€™t have to do it alone. 12/10 recommend to anyone looking for a lovely group of humans that gently nudge you to courageously do the work, ten minutes at a time, so that you can create all that youโ€™re called to create.โ€
